Trial Lawyer

The focus of this position will be doing criminal trials in both the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court. Much of the administrative work, routine court appearances, and even research and factum writing will be done by other members of the firm. This position is for a lawyer who wants to run trials. Because of this, the lawyer filling this position will not necessarily need to be in the office every day and could live outside of Kingston and work remotely and just come to Kingston for trials.

Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Achieving impossible results
  • Perfecting the art of telling clients “that’s not a thing”
  • Making awesome legal arguments that will still probably not be accepted
  • Reviewing videos of your clients telling the police “their side of the story” 30 seconds after you told them not to talk to the police
  • Trials, trials, and more trials

Position specific competencies:

  • Technologically savvy and comfortable working with both Mac and PC
  • Strong oral advocacy skills
  • Methodical and strategic, with impeccable attention to detail (we don’t do fly by the seat of your pants lawyering)
  • Proactive (as opposed to deadline driven)
  • Comfortable working autonomously
  • Have a valid Ontario driver’s licence, own vehicle, and be willing to travel within Ontario
  • Confidence and extensive experience running trials in both levels of court (3-5 years called to the bar or significant trial experience if less)

Additional (but not required) assets:

  • Experience doing criminal appeals
  • Experience in Correctional Law
  • Experience in Federal Court
  • Ability to speak, write, and run trials in French

Legal Assistant

Applicants must have a college or university degree and prior experience working in a professional office setting. Borys Law is willing to provide additional training in the areas of Criminal and Correctional Law, if needed.

  • Communicating with clients, verbally and in writing
  • Visiting clients in prison
  • Managing web and social media presence, including content development
